Capturing the Charm of an Old Property in North Devon for a Devonshire Estate Agent
This case study revolves around a unique photography project where we were commissioned by a Devonshire estate agent to capture the essence of an old property nestled in the heart of North Devon. Given the property’s age and character, our task was to produce a collection of images that showcased its historical charm while also accentuating its features and potential. To achieve this, we employed a range of professional equipment and innovative techniques tailored to the winter conditions and the property’s distinct characteristics.
Equipment Used:
- Canon 5D MK4 Camera
- 17-35mm f4 L Lens
- 24-70mm 2.8 L Lens
- 70-200mm 2.8L Lens
- Canon Flashgun
- DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone
- Neewer Spotlights
Challenges of Winter and Dim Lighting:
The winter season posed a challenge due to the limited natural light and the dimly lit interiors of the old property. Our approach involved a strategic combination of lighting techniques to bring out the property’s character and age. The Canon flashgun and Neewer spotlights were crucial components in creating the right ambiance, subtly illuminating the spaces while preserving their historical charm.
Crafting Characterful Imagery:
Our lens selection, including a variety of focal lengths from the 17-35mm f4 L to the 70-200mm 2.8L, allowed us to capture the intricate details of the property’s architecture and design. The Canon 5D MK4, known for its image quality, played a pivotal role in retaining the authenticity of the property’s textures and features. In cases where the available light was insufficient, we employed long exposure photography techniques to capture the depth and mood of the interior spaces.
HDR Photography for Exterior Shots:
The property’s exterior presented a dynamic range challenge due to the extreme lighting conditions. To address this, we employed HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography techniques for outdoor shots. The DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone allowed us to capture stunning aerial perspectives while managing the varying intensities of light, resulting in balanced and captivating images that showcased the property’s surroundings.
Preserving Heritage Through Imagery:
Our comprehensive approach sought not only to create visually striking images but also to preserve and convey the property’s historical significance. By combining the right equipment, lighting techniques, and post-processing methods, we were able to capture the unique character of the old property and bring its stories to life through our imagery.
Conclusion:
This case study illustrates the successful collaboration between professional equipment, innovative techniques, and a keen eye for detail in capturing the charm of an old property in North Devon. Despite the challenges presented by the winter season and the dimly lit interiors, our photography showcases the property’s character and age in a compelling and authentic manner. The property had multiple offers after the pictures were put up on the client’s website.
